Instinct Spas
A budget hot tub that’s actually built right.
Buying a hot tub for under $9,000 has historically been a minefield. The market at this price point has been full of weak shells, unclamped plumbing lines, proprietary parts that cost a fortune to replace, and curbside-dropped tubs the dealer never wanted to see again. Decent construction at this price didn’t exist.
We got tired of telling people their only option for a quality hot tub was $12,000 or more. So we went to one of the top-tier hot tub manufacturers in North America, laid out our five non-negotiables for a properly built spa, and asked them to build it at a real-world budget price. They agreed. The result is the Instinct line.
All five quality boxes — checked
If you’ve read our Buyers Guide, you know the five things that separate a hot tub that lasts twenty years from one that ends up in a landfill in seven. Every Instinct hits all five:
- A strong, self-supporting shell — no support blocks or cradles
- Glued and clamped plumbing lines (yes, every joint)
- Compression-fit jets — no two-piece silicone-sealed jets
- Quality OEM components — Balboa, Waterways, the standard reliable parts you can replace anywhere for $20–$30 instead of $300
- Full open-cell foam insulation — efficient, repairable, never hardens
How they stack up
The 7-foot, two-pump Instinct compares directly with the heavy hitters that dominate the $12K–$14K tier — Bullfrog X-Series, Jacuzzi 300 Series, Sundance 780. Same build quality. Same therapy. Same twenty-year longevity expectations. The price is the only meaningful difference.
Local dealer install. No curbside drop.
Most online-direct hot tub lines burn their dealer network and drop tubs on your driveway. Instinct does not. The tub is sold online, but the local dealer in your area handles the backyard delivery, professional installation, and your warranty service. Your money stays in your community, and you actually have a human to call if something goes wrong.
I bought one for my own cottage
Full transparency: after I (Bill) reviewed the first units off the production line, I bought one for my own cottage. That’s how confident we are in the build.
Backed by HTU’s Buyers Protection — free
Every Instinct buyer gets our Buyers Protection Service at no cost. If your dealer drops the ball on anything — install, service, communication — you call us, and we work directly with the dealer and the factory on your behalf. With 100,000+ visitors a year and 5,000+ buying decisions we influence, manufacturers take our calls.
One bit of full disclosure
We do get a small referral fee for every Instinct sold. We also get a referral fee on most hot tubs we help people buy — that’s how this industry works, and someone gets a referral fee no matter what you choose. The Buyers Protection Service we throw in is free, and our editorial position on Instinct stands on its own merit: it’s a properly built tub at a price you can’t touch anywhere else.
Hands down the best value in hot tubs today. We don’t say that lightly.
